Second Sunday after Christmas

Call to Worship

Inspired by Jeremiah 31:7-14

Leader:  Sing aloud with gladness, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations. Proclaim, give praise, and say, “Save your people, O Lord!.”

Congregation:  He has brought us forth from throughout all the world; He has gathered us from all parts of the earth.

Leader: Among those whom He gathers are the blind and the lame. Those in tears, and those who stumble.

Congregation:  He will gather all people to him and will shepherd them as a flock. He will lead us and redeem us.

Leader: Come and sing aloud; praise the goodness of the Lord. Rejoice with the dance and be merry. Take comfort; your Lord turns mourning into joy and sorrow into gladness.

Congregation: We come that we may be filled; the goodness of the Lord will satisfy us.

Leader: Let us lift up our voices and sing the praises to the Lord.

Song of Rejoicing – Oh For a Thousand Tongues to Sing/ Angels from the Realms of Glory

Reading of the Scriptures – Psalm 147:12-20

Extol the Lord, Jerusalem; praise your God, Zion. He strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your people within you. He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat. He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes. He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast? He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow. He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel. He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the Lord.

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God who inhabits eternity but dwells with those who are of a humble and contrite spirit: before you and our Lord Jesus Christ we confess our sins. We have ignored the presence of your Spirit. We have failed to look for the return of our Savior and Judge. We have been blind to your coming in the suffering of the hungry, the exiled, the destitute, the sick, and the imprisoned. In your great goodness, put away our offenses and cleanse us from our sin, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Songs of Response – Behold Our God

Reading of the Scriptures – Ephesians 1:3-14

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
