Call to Worship
Leader: This is what the LORD, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts says: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Who is like me? Let them proclaim it, let them declare and set it forth before me.
Congregation: There is none like you, O LORD.
Leader: Who has announced from of old the things to come? Let them tell us what is yet to be. Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it?
Congregation: You alone know and proclaim what has been, what is, and what is to come. We will not fear!
Leaders: You are my witnesses! Is there any god besides me? There is no other rock; I know not one.
Congregation: We are your witnesses! You are our Rock! You alone are God!
Songs of Praise – O Lord, My Rock and My Redeemer/ Ancient of Days
Reading of the Psalms – Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24
O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Song of Reflection – At the Cross
Prayer of Confession
O Lord, You have searched us and known us. You know when we sit down and when we rise up; you discern our thoughts from far away. You see us when we walk or lie down, you know every detail of our conduct. Even before a word is on our tongue, O Lord, You know it completely. So examine us, and know our hearts, O God; test us and know our thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in us, and lead us in the way that leads to eternal life.
Assurance of Pardon
Reading of the Scriptures – Romans 8:12-25
So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
