First Sunday of Advent: Shine Upon Us, O Lord

Call to Worship

Inspired by Psalm 80

Leader:  Oh children of God, there is One who is enthroned in the heavens; He alone can save us!

Congregation:  Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

Leader: The Lord of Hosts is to be feared above all else; we are his people and He is a just God.

Congregation:  Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

Leader: He has brought a vine out of Egypt; He has cleared the ground and has dug a deep place that it might take root and fill the land.

Congregation:  Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

Leader: Come all you and be faithful; be joyful and triumphant. For we call upon his name and he gives us life!

Song of Praise – O Come, All Ye Faithful

Reading of the Old Testament – Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19 (ESV)

Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock. You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth. Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your might and come to save us!

Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved!

O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people’s prayers? You have fed them with the bread of tears and given them tears to drink in full measure. You make us an object of contention for our neighbors, and our enemies laugh among themselves.

Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved!

But let your hand be on the man of your right hand, the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself! Then we shall not turn back from you; give us life, and we will call upon your name!

Restore us, O Lord God of hosts! Let your face shine, that we may be saved!

Songs of Praise – Mighty to Save

Prayer of Confession

God of salvation, in Christ you have done great things— Our hearts are filled with joy. By your power you lifted us out of the wasteland of sin and brought us with joy and laughter into your kingdom.

Salvation is your gift to us. But we confess that often we try to replace your gift with our own efforts. We try to complete what is already perfect; We try to add to what is already full; We try to earn what we have already have. Forgive us for our foolishness. Help us to focus on your cross and empty grave. Help us to live grateful lives in return. For Jesus’ sake alone. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Pastoral Prayer

Songs of Reflection – Is He Worthy?

Reading of the New Testament – 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 (ESV)

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
