First Sunday of Christmas

First Sunday after Christmas

Call to Worship

Inspired by Luke 2:22-40, the revealing of the Lord to Simeon and Anna

Leader:  The righteous and devout who long for the coming of the Lord can rejoice, for He has come; those with whom the Spirit of the Lord is shall see Him with their own eyes.

Congregation:  We come with great expectation and the promise of God that He has come.

Leader: Come and see the Salvation of the Lord prepared for all peoples.

Congregation:  He is the Light of the world and the glory of His people.

Leader: The Christ Child came into this world for the falling and the rising of many, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed.

Congregation: The One who will redeem His people has come. We worship Him who has come with the favor of God upon Him.

Leader: Let us worship Him with the angels and shepherds and with Simeon and Anna and with all who long for His coming.

Song of Rejoicing – Hark! the Herald Angel Sing

Reading of the Scriptures – Psalm 148

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts! Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the Lord! For he commanded and they were created. And he established them forever and ever; he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away. Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word! Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! Beasts and all livestock, creeping things and flying birds! Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! Young men and maidens together, old men and children! Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his majesty is above earth and heaven. He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his saints, for the people of Israel who are near to him. Praise the Lord!

Songs of Worship – Angels We Have Heard On High/ Joy Has Dawned

Prayer of Confession

Eternal God, we confess that while our lips have said one thing, our lives have said another. We honor you one day, not the next. We live our love for you at some times, and become very selfish at other times. Sometimes we love the light and sometimes we live in darkness. Have mercy on us and forgive us for Christ’s sake. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Pastoral Prayer

Songs of Response – Joy to the World

Reading of the Scriptures – Galatians 4:4-7

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
